Expanding a Mews

Murray Mews, London

Threefold Architects have produced designs for the complete refurbishment and extension of a 1950’s mews house in Camden. Proposals also include an environmental upgrade of the existing fabric of the building to provide higher levels of insulation and the replacement of all windows with high-performance double glazed units.

Although situated in a dense urban mews, the proposed scheme aims to channel natural light into the centre of the building, create a variety in the type of spaces within the building, and maximise the relationship between inside and outside.

The design features a central open tread staircase, which travels up through the centre of the house and is illuminated by a large overhead rooflight. Bedrooms and bathrooms are located on the ground floor and have access to the small courtyard garden. The first floor comprises a large open plan dual aspect space for kitchen, dining and living and leads onto a large sunny terrace at the rear. The new roof extension provides an additional two spaces for flexible use, which open onto terraces at the front of the house. Each floor has a distinct floor finish, which responds to both programmatic practicalities and playfully uses materials to give the sense of a conversation between floors.

The project is due for completion in December 2011.
