A Gridshell Landscape
New Islington Bridge
Threefold Architects 2007 Gridshell Landscape competition entry was for a new pedestrian bridge in New Islington, Manchester.
The brief called for a structure that links the three sides of the canal and addresses the differing levels and site constraints, whilst producing an object of beauty. The bridge connects key routes around the site and at the same time provides an additional public space over the canal.
The design approach was inspired by the history of the site; the mills, the looms, the method of weaving and the structure of fabric. In response, Threefold Architects proposed a gently sloping landscape, which is formed from a gridshell structure of interconnected woven timber members. Decking, planting, seating and lighting are stitched onto the surface creating places to stop, linger and enjoy. Punctures between the structural grid and ground surface provide views both down to and up from the water below.
