  • Stitching a street together

Commissioned by Brick by Brick Threefold Architects have designed a series of 3 contemporary mansion blocks creating 15 new homes that stitch together three sites on a single street in Crystal Palace.

The project is spread across three infill plots, located on the same road in Crystal Palace. The sites are very sensitive from a planning and conservation perspective; being within and bordering three conservation Areas, sandwiched between detached and semi detached Edwardian housing and post war maisonette blocks. The proposed buildings are conceived as contemporary mansion blocks that stitch together the context of each site, acting as carefully considered link elements in both massing and appearance between the traditional period housing and post war blocks of flats.

The architectural language of the proposal references the pitched roofs and expressed gables and bays of the predominantly Edwardian stock of the conservation area. Contemporary lines and external balconies of the post war maisonette blocks are also incorporated into the language. Each mansion block has generous top lit communal areas and shared gardens to encourage crossover and interaction between residents. Each apartment  is dual aspect with a private garden or balcony and a south facing aspect over Westow Park from the living space.

In total the scheme provides 9 two bedroom flats and 6 one bedroom flats split across three buildings, with accessible units at Ground level.
